The Saft R&D Center began work on a Li/FeS van battery R&D contract in April 1990 with the Electric and Hybrid Propulsion Division (EHP) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), co-funded by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and under the technical management of the Electrochemical Technology Program of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The main objective of the 36 month contract was to develop, fabricate, and deliver a full-size van battery using Li/FeS multiplate prismatic cells providing a vehicle range of 100 to 200 miles.
