The EUROCONTROL Agency, together with the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States, has developed and implemented a device for measuring performance of airborne transponders. This device is called MTPA - Mobile Transponder Performance Analyser. It gives the possibility of measuring different characteristics of transponders in day to day working conditions (at the aircraft take-off). It is installed in a van which is set up near the runway at the airport where measurements are requested. Measurements are done on all aircraft which cross the beam of the antenna of the measurement device, and which have their transponder on. Results are recorded. They are analysed later on in order to obtain information about the performance of the population of transponders which have been measured, and particularly about the out of standard values which have been detected. The present report describes a set of measurements made in cooperation with the French Civil Aviation authority at ORLY Airport in Spring 1984 and gives the corresponding results.
