The report recalls the specific laws which govern hypersonic flows and points to the problems and hazards associated with such flows. The following points are considered: (a) Definition of the concept of 'hypersonic', based on the characteristics of hypersonic flows; (b) Summary of the hypersonic laws of similarity and of a few approximation methods (to provide a better understanding of operating modes); (c) A few examples illustrating the design of projectile shapes particularly well-suited to hypersonic flight; (d) Presentation and evaluation of various guiding modes suitable for hypersonic flight conditions; (e) Remarks concerning aerodynamic heating, projectile fastening on the shoe, and sensor mounting. The report attempts to explain clearly the peculiarities of hypersonic flows and to indicate their validity range.
