The problem of rotary wing cockpit instrumentation is shown to be one involving both control and display. Valuable techniques can be drawn from fixed-wing instrument analyses and developments. For aviator training and operations under VFR as well as transition and IFR conditions, today's helicopter cockpits are handicapped by fixed wing instruments in configurations that do not take full advantage of research of 20 years. The special value of the helicopter for the missions it performs as aerial truck, ambulance and armored car combine with unique performance to create cockpit instrumentation problems that must be addressed anew. The paper discusses solutions toward improved instrumentation systems, predicated on an aviator-oriented, integrated-function, modal display approach to ease training and operations in the helicopter's low-altitude, low-speed, steep-slope world under all visibility conditions.
