The systems study effort has been directed toward the verification and refinement of the conclusions reached in a previous study, which indicated that the fly wheel hybrid drive concept might be a technically feasible way to power a full size automobile. The present study makes use of more detailed input information on engine emissions on transmission characteristics. These data are augmented by detailed flywheel technology studies and test results to provide the background for more precise conclusions regarding the flywheel drive concept. The results do indicate that the flywheel bybrid drive concept is a technically feasible propulsion system for a full size automobile. The report describes the work done to accomplish the following goals: advance the development of flywheel systems technology including the development of final designs on conformal housings, bearings, seals, and evacuation systems; demonstrate positive flywheel energy containment in burst tests of flywheels; formulate safety analyses, using fault-tree and gross-hazard methodologies, produce engine-mapping project data to permit calculation of engine emission data resulting from flywheel drive operations.
