In the different studies conducted by the Swedish defense, there are often discussions about the night and adverse weather capabilities of ground attack aircraft. The report is a review of: the quantity of attack aircraft (including helicopters) and bombers that are operational in NATO and WP; the total load capacity of all attack aircraft; and the US inventory of air-to-surface missiles. The aircraft are divided into different classes according to their night and adverse weather capabilities. To illustrate the short-term trends, the situation in the US is shown both for 1988 and 1995. Presently there are not many aircraft that are capable of attacking small, non-stationary targets at night. The situation is, however, changing rapidly with the further procurement of FLIR pods.
