Studies are being made of a number of aspects and effects of freight operations in different types of shopping street with the object of providing an estimate of their total impact. In the report the results from Newbury and Camberley are given. The main activities in the studies were: collection of data on goods deliveries from shop managers, direct observation of traffic and freight operations by observers at street level, time-lapse photography from roof tops - the films being subjected to detailed scrutiny later in the Laboratory, recording of noise on the footway - the recordings being analysed later in the Laboratory, and surveys of attitudes of pedestrians and residents.
