The PNGV program is a cooperative research and development program involving the big-three automobile companies and the U.S. government. One of the principal goals of this partnership is to develop and demonstrate a production prototype automobile capable of achieving up to 80 miles per gallon by 2004. Aside from energy efficiency, this vehicle is to have the attributes of mid-sized cars such as the Ford Taurus, the Chevrolet Lumina, and the Chrysler Concorde. The NRC Standing Committee o Review of the Research Program of the PNGV has issued two reports, in October 1994 and in March 1996. Many of the recommendations from the reports are under implementation in both government and industry.
