The purpose of the investigation was to compare the safety in run-off-the-road accidents for different roadside designs. Three roadside cross-sections were suggested: soil cuttings, rock cuttings and embankments. A computerized model of vehicle dynamics provided results for the comparisons. With the use of this model, run-off-the-road accidents can be simulated. Different data (eg different roadside designs) can be given as input to the model. Several different criteria were used, when comparing the simulation results. Among these were the risk for roll-over, the external forces, time spent without ground contact and severity index. The results show that among the roadside cross-sections suggested there are both earth cuttings and embankments that are likely to provide satisfying safety with respect to run-off-the-road accidents. On the other hand, none of the rock-cuttings can be regarded as satisfying, from a traffic safety viewpoint.
