A preliminary, but complete, technical definition is provided of the spacecraft which forms ESA's contribution to a joint ESA/NASA Jupiter swingby out-of-ecliptic mission as far as the subsystems level. The establishment of a development program and the evaluation of the facilities required were also studied. The mission profile is: baseline ESA spacecraft plus auxiliary propulsion unit launch using Atlas Centaur/TEM 364-4 onto an indirect transfer to Jupiter. It is concluded that an ESA spacecraft could be designed which would carry the specified model payload to a high solar latitude and that the development program could be undertaken within the cost bracket specified. A January 1982 launch opportunity could be achieved.
