The present state-of-the-art of airborne multifunctional radar is reviewed and possible developments for future systems are discussed. The operational requirements of military aircraft radars are outlined with particular attention given to target acquisition and tracking, radar navigation and terrain following. The electromagnetic environments these systems will operate in are also characterized. The limitations of present radars are defined and suggestions are made regarding the directions of future research. Four possible areas of development are addressed: (1) improvement of the range resolution and complexity of the transmitted waveforms; (2) better utilization of the received signals; (3) improvement of angular domain; and (4) cooperation with the electromagnetic countermeasure system and other sensors onboard the aircraft.
