The TIROS-N/NOAA series of spacecraft is the third generation polar orbiting operational environmental satellite system. This series has been designed and contracted for, in partnership, between the National Environmental Satellite Service (NESS) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The evolution of these systems has been from the relatively simple, early TIROS (Television and Infrared Observation System) with their low resolution, visible, TV systems through a series of improved spacecraft (TOS, ITOS) to the present sophisticated, computer controlled TIROS-N spacecraft. Responsibilities for the systems are broken down such that NASA develops and procures the actual spacecraft system, while NOAA is responsible for the operational control, use, and dissemination of data. Thus far, dozens of environmental spacecraft of all types have been orbited by the United States.
