In consideration of the impact of Alaskan oil transport on Puget Sound attention is given to the probabilities of spillage, the hazards, containment and cleanup, spill prevention, alternative sources of oil, costs of spills and options in tanker traffic. In summary it is pointed out that as both government and industry incorporate technology assessment in their actions, the engineer's role will change. The barriers resulting from specialization must be broken down. Narrowness must be replaced by breadth of understanding and the ability of the engineer expanded to use multidisciplinary considerations in his work. The Alaskan oil issue illustrates that the engineer has a newly realized social responsibility and indicates that previous decisions based purely on engineering and economic considerations no longer are acceptable to a public more concerned with quality than with quantity.
