The design of rocket engines is discussed, with particular reference to the Ariane launch vehicle. The parameters affecting engine efficiency are explained as well as the design problems. Trends are illustrated by the description of the HM60 engine which is a H2/O2 system in development for the future Ariane 5 launcher. The HM60 is designed for 900 kN thrust.
