An ability to monitor, diagnose, and respond to anomalies in real time in the attitude control subsystem is critical for long term, uninterrupted satellite communication service. INTELSAT (International Telecommunications Satellite Organization) is developing an expert system for satellite operations. Innovative use of two techniques, model based reasoning and probabilistic fault determination, is described. The goals of the system are to minimize attitude disturbances, and recovery time, reduce communication outages and increase the satellite system availability.
