The objective of this project is to develop diagnostic techniques for microscopically characterizing thruster plume species, velocity, and state-resolved V(sub i), E(sub i), v(sub i), j(sub i) distributions. Such techniques will provide a scientific and engineering understanding of the operation of chemical and electrical thrusters, leading to the development of thrusters with improved performance and reliability, and reduced contamination potential. They will also enable performance and contamination codes to be validated and improved with a minimum of ground test time, thereby accelerating thruster development, and reducing research and development costs and spacecraft integration testing.
