Names for Navy ships traditionally have been chosen and announced by the Secretary of the Navy. Members of the public are sometimes interested in having Navy ships named for certain persons, places, or things. Congress in recent years has proposed, and sometimes passed, legislation regarding the naming of specific ships. Section 1012 of the FY2007 defense authorization act (H.R. 5122/P.L. 109-364), expresses the sense of the Congress that the aircraft carrier CVN-78 should be named for President Gerald R. Ford. This report will be updated when events warrant.
