The development status of the Ariane 5 main cryogenic engine, Vulcain, is presented. Basic project objectives are: low launch cost; very high level of reliability and safety; high payload capability and versatility. Today, the whole Ariane 5 program is in progress in order to insure the availability of a ready to fly launcher, first in an unmanned automatic configuration in the mid 90's, then in a man-rated configuration with the Hermes hypersonic glider.
