The paper discusses that portion of the entire air trip package during which the air traveler is not actually airborne. For short to medium intercity passenger trips of 800 miles or less, aircraft technology has progressed to the point that airborne or flight time for most of these trips is of short duration and that further reductions in flight time will be small; these reductions will stem mostly from improvements in air traffic control technology rather than from increases in cruising speed. As a consequence, attention is focused on the ground transportation problem -- to include passenger delays from queuing on ramps, while waiting within terminal areas, as well as the usually-talked-about ground travel or access time between the airport and one's office or home.
