The 2007 Budget maintains the U.S. Coast Guard's ability to respond to current and emerging mission demands. The funds requested sustain Coast Guard operations, fill specific capability and capacity gaps and support the vital modernization, conversion, and recapitalization of the Coast Guard's major surface and air assets, along with the systems that connect them. The Coast Guard is one of the nation's five armed services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests - in the nation's ports and waterways, along the coast, on international waters, or in any maritime region required to support national security.
