At the end of 1990, in the beginning of 1991 the Regional Organization for Road Safety conducted an extensive compaign concerning alcohol and traffic. A publicity campaign and a police surveillance, which were used in that campaign, lasted for two months. From the data based on a before and after study carried out by the Dutch Institute for Road Safety Research SWOV, driving while influenced in the province of Utrecht does not appear to have been decreased after the alcohol campaign. Compared with the national average at the end of 1989, the percentage of drivers while influenced in the province of Utrecht was already much lower during the before study. The controls on use of alcohol have been conducted by the teams of the national police and municipal police. On basis of the results recommendations to reduce further driving while influenced are provided.
