The paper describes a system with which the one-dimensional position of an aircraft in the flight direction can be determined with a very high accuracy. The ground and airborne parts of the system are discussed, as well as the factors which influence the accuracy. It is shown that the attainable accuracy is in the order of 0.3 meter if the aircraft flies at low altitude above the centerline of the runaway. If the aircraft taxies, a situation often occurring during take-off and landing trials, the accuracy is better than 0.1 meter.
