Experimental testing of a Radar Beacon 3-Pulse Side Lobe Suppression (SLS) System vertical radiation coverage was conducted at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC), Atlantic City, New Jersey, and four joint-use field sites. Preliminary flight testing was performed at NAFEC to determine correspondence between vertical lobing theory and practice. Field flight testing was conducted at the AN/FPS-66 site at Jacksonville, Florida; the AN/FPS-24 site at Bucks Harbor, Maine; the AN/FPS-27 site at Charleston, South Carolina; and AN/FPS-35 site at Boron, California, on station radials presumed to have severe vertical lobing caused by flat terrain. Commissioning of the 3-Pulse SLS System at all joint-use field sites was delayed until tests could be conducted to determine if the omni-directional antennas required installation modifications. After testing, it was concluded that the joint-use field site 3-Pulse SLS Systems should be utilized, provided the omni-directional antennas be moved vertically closer together wherever possible and environmental tests be conducted on the AT-914/UPX Omni-directional Antenna.
