The main control shaft for Fort Peck tunnel 4 incloses two concentric towers, with an annular water passage between. The towers are interconnected near their bases by six ports, the discharge through which is controlled by a cylinder gate. Model investigation of the control structure was concerned with the elimination of cavitation in the port liner castings and reduction of harmful vibration of the cylinder gates. The following alterations to the existing design were investigated: Partition walls; guide vanes; air vents; offsets in the inner tower of the control structure; guide vans; dividing walls; and roof cap or baffles in the outer water passage of the control structure.
