A livestock trucking information clearinghouse called Trans-Fax was established by the American National Cattlemen's Association in 1974. The clearinghouse was an attempt to remedy the shortage of livestock trucking services in 1972 and 1973. By moving trucks from surplus to deficit regions and increasing backhaul movements, a clearinghouse could significantly increase the efficiency of utilization of available livestock trucks. The operations of Trans-Fax are detailed in the report. Reviewed is the nature of livestock trucking and the success of the clearinghouse in facilitating the movement of livestock. The results of shipper and trucker surveys are reported. Finally, the economic feasibility of the livestock trucking clearinghouse and its applicability to other commodities are assessed.
