The ESA Earth Observation Facility possible payload and mission configurations for a polar orbiting platform to be launched in the late nineties are discussed. Possible mission scenarios and the related application objectives are outlined. The main objectives for these configurations are the continuation of operational meteorological data acquisition and the exploitation of new remote sensing techniques. User requirements and the data service are considered.
