At elevated temperatures, hydrocarbon jet fuels tend to form deposits which decrease heat exchanger efficiency and plug screens and filter elements. In order to quantify this tendency so that it may be predicted, it is necessary to obtain comparative test results on a simulated aircraft fuel system and small-scale test devices. In the report, the thermal stability of five fuels, tested in the Advanced Aircraft Fuel System Simulator, are quantified in terms of the amount of deposit formed and effect on performance. In addition, the results of tests performed on the five fuels in twelve small-scale test devices are delineated and analyzed with respect to the fuels performance in the simulator. (Author)
