The Galaxy-C spacecraft is scheduled to be launched no earlier than September 21, 1984, on a Delta 392O/PAM launch vehicle configuration from the Eastern Space and Missile Center (ESMC). Hughes Communications, Inc., will reimburse NASA for the cost of providing standard Delta 3910 launch support, in accord with the terms of a Launch Services Agreement between NASA and Hughes Communications, Inc., dated June 11, 1982, as well as the incremental costs of providing Delta 3920 launch support. The Hughes Galaxy-C satellite will relay video, voice, data, and facsimile communications in the continental U.S. for business communications customers. The satellite consists of 24 operating transponders and six spares, and will operate in the 6/4 GHz (C-band) range. To date, 12 transponders have been sold to MCI. Like Galaxy-A and -B, Galaxy-C is designed to take full advantage of the concept of private ownership. This satellite is the third of three to be launched on Delta for Hughes. The first (Galaxy-A) was successfully launched by Delta on June 28, 1983, and the second (Galaxy-B) satellite was launched on September 22, 1983. The Galaxy satellites are part of the HS 376 communications satellite family developed by Hughes Aircraft Company. The launch vehicle for the Galaxy-C mission will be the Delta 3920 which consists of the Extended Long-Tank Thor booster with RS-27 engine, nine Castor IV strap-on motors, and the Aerojet ITIP second stage. The spacecraft perigee stage is the McDonnell Douglas P-411 stage which will place the spacecraft in an approximate transfer orbit with an apogee of 36,000 km, a perigee of 185 km, and an inclination of 23.51 degrees. Approximately 36 hours (2nd apogee) after launch, the spacecraft Apogee Kick Motor (AKM) will circularize the orbit at roughly 36,000 km geosynchronous altitude, and its hydrazine system will drift the satellite to its final location above the equator at 93.5 degrees West longitude. The Hughes telemetry and command receive-transmit Earth stations located at Brooklyn, New York, and Fillmore, California, with its operations control center at El Segundo, California, will take control of the satellite after separation from the launch vehicle.
