A technique for rapid maintenance and repair of airfield aluminum landing mat facilities is presented. The use of aluminum landing mat for establishment of quick reaction tactical airfields, and forward area surveillance, liaison, and cargo airfields is summarized. Maintenance and repair requirements of these facilities resulting from enemy weaponry damage and mat subgrade failure are defined. State of the art of current techniques used for maintenance and repair of aluminum landing mat facilities is reviewed and analyzed. An improved technique for rapid maintenance and repair of AM-2 aluminum landing mat is described. The technique uses saws and linear shape charges for mat removal. Subgrade repair is accomplished using conventional techniques. Specially designed panels and connectors are used in replacing the mat surfacing. Explosive impulse welding is used in making final closure. The new technique reduces equipment and time requirements for landing mat runway damage repairs significantly. It provides a quick fix capability for aluminum mat apron maintenance and repair which previously did not exist. (Author)
