The report presents the results of a development of an automatic ship lines creation procedure for concept design purposes, performed under contract for the Naval Ship Engineering Center. The lines creation procedure is based on conformal mapping functions for the representation of the underwater part of the ship sections, and on an influence polynomial representation of the sectional area curve, the design waterline, the abovewater sections, and other features of the hull shape. A set of computer programs was developed that gives the user control over those essential hull form parameters which are known in the earliest stages of design and traditionally used by the naval architect to specify his design intentions. The programs return the mathematical definition of a fair ship hull meeting the given requirements whenever feasible. The results can be used for display and evaluation, and, if desired, as a starting point for further automatic lines manipulation, particularly in the active graphics mode. (Author)
