The Aircraft to Satellite Data Relay (ASDAR) system was used in the Global Weather Experiment to demonstrate the feasibility of transmission of meteorological data from suitably equipped aircraft via the International Data Collection System on the Geostationary Satellite System. A total of 17 ASDAR units were installed on aircraft of the U.S. Air Force and 8 airlines from 8 countries. This fleet collected 230,000 data points for the FGGE Level 2 data set. The data on wind and temperature are accurate. The data are particularly valuable in the Southern Hemisphere and several prototype units continue in operation. Experience from the prototypes and analyses undertaken as part of FGGE were used to specify operational equipment under development.
