The purpose of this test is to capture and publish a rear crash pulse to accompany SAE J2917 and SAE J2956. The pulse will be used to evaluate future patient compartment interior designs and equipment mounting integrity. Procedure A 2005 Ford E-350 National Type III certified Star of Life ambulance was purchased for the rear impact testing. The ambulance test weight was 9,975lb. The ambulance was positioned in neutral with the parking brake disengaged and centered on the facility track. A rolling cart specified in the IIHS Side Impact Crashworthiness Evaluation Crash Test Protocol Version VI1 was aligned to impact the rear of the ambulance with zero overlap at 50km/h. Four off-board high-speed digital imagers and one real-time digital camcorder were used to capture the crash event. The ambulance patient compartment was instrumented in accordance with Crash Testing of Ambulance Chassis Cab Vehicles. Data from the vehicle instrumentation was recorded with an on-board Messring NA33 data acquisition system. Accelerometer data was also recorded on the IIHS MDB cart using a Messring data acquisition system.
