Investigation of accidents and incidents involving icing problems on large transport and small general aviation aircraft indicate that misconceptions exist regarding both the effects on aircraft of ice accumulations and the effectiveness of the means used to remove ice and snow and of delaying deposits reforming. It has also been recognized that the guidance information needed should be directed to all segments of aviation, to include aircraft manufacturers; airline engineering, maintenance, service and operations organizations; aircraft maintenance and service personnel; and aircrew of all aircraft types and categories. The information given in the publication is, therefore, of a general nature and intended to provide a basic understanding, to facilitate development of standardized procedures and guidance by the various segments of the aviation industry.
