The Gemini Program is a continuation of the study of man's adaptation to the space environment. This includes studying the crew while under conditions of zero gravity for extended periods, making simple repairs and performing manual exercises, maneuvering the spacecraft for rendezvous and docking with other orbiting vehicles, performing experiments, and controlling the spacecraft during reentry. Gemini flight number nine will be the seventh manned orbital flight in the Gemini Program, and the ninth of twelve missions. Previous missions have proven the success of orbital insertion, structural integrity, in-flight maneuvering capability, and nominal systems performance. Gemini IV demonstrated the feasibility of a four-day mission duration and extravehicular activity. On Gemini V an eight-day duration was demonstrated and the radar and guidance system was further evaluated. Gemini VI proved the feasibility of rendezvous, fly-around and station-keeping maneuvers with another spacecraft. Gemini VII demonstrated man s capability to perform complex functions through a 14-day period in space. Gemini VIII demonstrated the first Agena rendezvous and docking mission. Gemini IX will further demonstrate manned spaceflight capability, and further develop techniques and procedures employed to rendezvous and dock with the Gemini Agena Target Vehicle (GATV). An accelerated rendezvous sequence will be used which, during the one and one half revolutions prior to docking, will simulate the sequence currently planned for the Apollo lunar rendezvous. This mission will be the first to use both the GATV primary propulsion system (PPS) and secondary propulsion system (SPS) for orbital maneuvering of the docked spacecraft/GATV. In addition, extravehicular activities will be demonstrated during this flight.
