This paper describes the major developments in test techniques for hypervelocity erosion in the U.S. since 1970. Techniques in use at that time are described in detail in Ref. 1, and only specific improvements as well as new techniques will be discussed here. The area of hypervelocity erosion has received significantly increased interest since 1970, with resulting improvement in the data quality as well as the overall test capability. Highlights of these areas include: facilities for heating and accurately measuring temperatures (surface) of ballistic range test models, capability to test in a variable, controlled snow/ice field in a ballistic range, successful development of two sounding rocket systems for full size payload launch into a natural clouds with subsequent recovery, and development of a new test technique for recovering test models undamaged in a ballistic range. In addition, several test techniques primarily involving rocket motor exhausts with particle injection are in development.
