Map-matching and non map-matching navigation systems are introduced. A map-matching system for motorists which needs digital data of the road-network is presented. Digitization of topographic maps, practical map scales, structuring of the data and storage problems are discussed. With the aid of the communication system driver put in the destination. The actual location of the automobile is always present even during parking. Location and route-search systems provide the navigation system input. The on-board computer processes the inputs, calculates an optimal route, and prepares a step-by-step route guidance. The communication system presents this information by a synthetic voice to the driver. The driver can ignore the guidance of the system and make his own decision. The system recognizes this fact and calculates a new optimal route to the destination immediately. It is an autonomous system but it is open to support from an infrastructure including radio beacon or satellite systems.
