The evolution of propulsion systems since 1950 is depicted, including the first flight of the General Electric/NASA unducted fan engine on a Boeing 727. The fuel consumption and weight of turbofan, propfan, and CRISP systems are compared. The development of shrouded propulsion systems for the mid-nineties is discussed. The fundamentals of the CRISP concept are given. Its advantages, as well as the requirement for new technologies are described.
