Traffic movements at Uxbridge Circus roundabout on Western Avenue (A40) were studied before and after the introduction in November 1966 of the advisory give-way rule for roundabouts. As this roundabout was near several involved in the long 83-site experiment it was not surprising to find that drivers were mostly obeying the convention of right-hand priority before the announcement of the rule. No overall significant changes were found in capacity, precedence, or gap acceptance, or in the distribution of vehicles in peak period flow. There was no increase in the proportion (less than 10% of cars observed) which were delayed for 20 seconds or more after passing a point 50 yards before the roundabout. There was evidence of a slight reduction of approach speeds. There was also evidence that the formalisation of the priority rule tended to increase the difficulty on one part of the roundabout, where peak congestion was already being caused by a restricted exit road.
