Previous research had demonstrated that the hydrodynamic coefficients in the equations of motion simulating ship maneuvering can be 'measured' (identified) by the application of system identification techniques to ship motion measurements taken during special maneuvering trials of the ship. The ship involved in this successful effort was the Esso Osaka and it required taking the ship out of service for some time in order to conduct the special trials and using rather special instrumentation to measure the four motion responses of forward speed, sway, yaw velocity, and heading angle. The preferred goal of the present project was to determine whether the hydrodynamic coefficients of a ship can be identified from simple trials conducted during a regular (routine) voyage using only instrumentation already on board.
