The increase in speed and maneuverability of airplanes in recent years has made it advisable to segregate test flying from commercial and general flying. The size of the airspace, the location of control facilities, remoteness from the general public and the availability of emergency landing and rescue facilities are among the major factors to be considered in the choice of a suitable airspace. There are two main airspaces for supersonic testing in the United States and a site has been proposed for a third one. None of these meets the ideal requirements, but the establishment of the existing ones has considerably reduced the possibility of collision. Although further safety improvements are planned, much work still needs to be done so that the hazards connected with high speed flight can be further reduced. (Author)
