The pomona-Rincon Road and the Serrano Bridge are documented and evaluated as historical resources, and context and setting are provided for the study of other roads and trails in the Prado Basin. Extensive research utilized GLO maps and surveyor's notes, plat maps, county records, and other primary sources, and greatly augmented existing information, not only about the Pomona-Rincon Road, but also about the profound importance of transportation network as a whole, as it influenced the locations of settlement from the very earliest rancho days and the prosperity of various economic endeavors. Rather than merely connecting existing settlements or industries, the road and trail system grew out of the optimum routes for exploration and immigration, responded to remote events such as the Gold Rush and completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and encouraged grouth at nodes (e.g., fords and bridges) or transfer points (e.g., railroad stations). The projected cost of relocating existing roads and the railroad alignment was, in fact, one of the crucial criteria in selecting the site of Prado Dam. The Serrano (PB-95) still stands, partially collapsed and seasonally inundated, where the Pomona-Rincon Road crosses Chino Creek. By itself, it would not be eligible because of impaired integrity and lack of engineering innovation or other special qualities. However, it is an element of the historic road, and is the only surviving example of the Prado Basin bridges. (jhd)
