The orderly process which serves as a basis on which to plan, design, and evaluate transportation systems is generally considered to be comprised of the following key technical phases: Population and economic studies; Land use allocation; Trip generation; Trip distribution; Modal split; Traffic assignment. This manual will be devoted to a discussion of the application of regression analysis to trip generation. The purpose of trip generation analysis is to predict the number of trips per average weekday that begin and end in small geographic areas (zones). It follows that productions for home based trips are the trip ends at the residence zone whereas productions for non home based trips are the origin ends. Also, attractions for home based trips are the trip ends in the non-residence zone and the attractions for non home based trips are the destination ends. (Author)
