At 2052, September 27, 1973, a Texas International Airlines, Inc., CV-600, N94230, crashed in the Ouachita Mountain Range, Arkansas. The accident occurred 80 nautical miles north-northwest of Texarkana and 8.5 nautical miles north-northwest of Mena, Arkansas. Eight passengers and three crewmembers were killed, and the aircraft was destroyed. The aircraft was making a round trip flight from Dallas, Texas, to Memphis, Tennessee, with intermediate stops at Texarkana, El Dorado, and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. The flight was conducted at night under visual flight rules. A cold front with associated thunderstorms and instrument meteorological conditions existed between El Dorado and Texarkana. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the accident was the captain's attempt to operate the flight under visual flight rules in night instrument meteorological conditions.
