The report presents observations of wear on freight car wheels caused by wheel-rail interaction at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST), located at the Transportation Test Center (TTC), Pueblo, Colorado. At this facility the wear tests are run with minimal braking, thus isolating the effects of wheel-rail interaction from brake heating. Three metal removal mechanisms operating on the tread and flange were identified and documented. A nucleation mechanism is proposed for both the oblique cracks found on the field side of the tread and the transverse cracks appearing near the taping line of the tread.
