There has been recent interest in high speed passenger rail, with speeds in excess of 125 mph. The potential for collisions at increased speeds and collisions involving passenger vehicles and vehicles with substantially different structures has renewed concerns about the passenger rail vehicle crashworthiness. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of alternative strategies for providing crashworthiness of the vehicle structures and interiors at increased collision speeds. This paper describes comparisons of strategies for structural crashworthiness of passenger vehicles and describes comparisons of strategies for interior crashworthiness for protection of occupants of the train during collisions.
