The article reviews the development of solid fuel ramjet engines beginning with the German experiments towards the end of World War II at the 'Skoda' Works in Czechoslovakia, discusses the particular design of one such ramjet which is already in series production, compares solid fuel ramjets with solid fuel rockets and evaluates the possibilities of using solid fuel ramjets. The advantages and disadvantages of solid fuel ramjets in comparison with solid fuel rockets are weighted. The prospects for the further development and the principal problems in the design and construction of solid fuel ramjets is also discussed. The most important problems associated with the choice of a fuel for the ramjet and the processes which take place in the mixing and combustion chambers are cursorily dealt with along with some of the results of the author's experiments. It is concluded that inasmuch as it is the basis of text book materials, in the future, when more statistical data has been assembled it will be possible to design solid fuel ramjet engines.
