In support of the Federal Aviation Administration, the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe Center) is conducting an evaluation of a laser based system concept called SOCRATES to determine its possible application in detecting potentially hazardous meteorological and wake turbulence phenomena. SOCRATE technology uses a laser beam to detect sound in the atmosphere. The objectives of the test were to define the nature of wake vortex acoustic signals and evaluate the capability of the SOCRATES technology to detect those acoustic signals. The SOCRATES test was conducted at the Wake Vortex Test Site at Kennedy Airport from May 13, 1998 through May 22, 1998. This report presents the data obtained by the Volpe Center using the ground-wind line to provide wake vortex lateral position ground truth and the data obtained using supplementary instrumentation.
