Serious consideration is being given within the DOD to the development of logistics systems based on the intermodal flow of cargo in standard containers. A key element in the selection of a suitable standard container is the quantification of the relative effects on cargo transfer costs and materials handling equipment requirements. The basic objective of this study is to provide an analytical investigation of the effect of alternative unitization modules on cargo transfer costs and handling equipment requirements at the interfaces between delivery aircraft and receiving surface or air vehicles.
