A postal survey of past and present British Rail season ticket holders was undertaken in Hertfordshire in 1980. 1,837 completed questionnaires were returned. The aims of the survey were to: show the travel-to-work, residential and occupational characteristics of the respondents; establish the frequency of and the reasons for job and home-moves; evaluate the extent of financial assistance available towards travel and housing costs; and suggest reasons for lapsed season ticket holders. Results showed a high level of mobility among Hertfordshire rail commuters. About one third of season ticket holders had changed their job or their home in the preceding two years. The rate of job changes alone was about 40%. Nearly a half of the respondents received subsidised loans for the purchase of season tickets. 15% received subsidised mortgages; only 5% had company cars. Analysis of lapsed season ticket holders suggested that the main reason for ceasing to commute by rail was changing to a job outside London. Relatively few respondents had switched mode to car to reach a job in Greater London; railheading - using another mode in addition to rail - was rare.
