As one task in a study for Naval Air Systems Command an examination was undertaken of the feasibility and desirability of functional modularity in the design and configuration of Naval avionics systems. The concept of prime concern was avionics designed on the basis of modular 'black boxes,' which for any given weapon system would be permanently configured and essentially hardwired. Flexibility in avionics functions mix or capabilities would be attained by reconfiguring a new group of existing black boxes to be installed in a new weapon system. The hypothesis was that at the possible expense of inefficient size, weight, and form factor, the reduction in dollar costs resulting from the reuse of common use of existing designs might be more cost-effective than initiating an integrated avionics design for each new weapon system.
